THE JOURNEY of the DOVE

  • The dove of peace that was once stolen off of the monument is traveling from hand to hand, home to home, institution to institution, as a messenger carrying the story of Alex’s life and the justice still outstanding in his case.

The dove started its journey with Alex’s daughter Helena and wife Norma, and is moving ever outward, through individuals and communities inspired by his legacy. Each host convenes a gathering to share Alex's story with family, friends, and neighbors. When the dove moves on, the host receives a precise hand-made replica, cast with a trace of the original bronze, as a gift. Over time, this process builds a "flock" of doves, each sitting in homes across the world, creating a decentralized network of monuments/storytellers. Each replica serves as a lasting reminder of Alex Odeh’s legacy with each holder becoming a long-term steward and storyteller.

At a moment when public monuments are being reconsidered across the country, the Stolen Dove asks not whether a monument should stand or fall, but what it can do when set in motion. By moving a public sculpture into the private lives of families and communities across the globe, the project brings an underrecognized figure into intimate, everyday spaces. By the time the dove returns to the statue, one hundred replicas will be living in homes and institutions worldwide. The only public monument of an Arab American in the United States will have multiplied a hundredfold.

The map below outlines where the dove has traveled so far.
